Plan Your Move
Moving Planner Checklist
The following Moving Planner Checklist from H & S Warehouse Inc provides a helpful guide to make sure nothing important is overlooked and your move goes smoothly.
6 to 7 Weeks Before Your Move:
- Create a “Move Plan” folder or file. You will find that organizer folders with pockets work well for this. Use this folder to keep track of all of your moving details and retain receipts.
- Start to use up things which you won’t or can’t move with you such as frozen foods and cleaning products.
- Determine your moving budget. If your employer is covering all or part of the cost, obtain written guidelines on what costs will and will not be covered.
- Make a list of what items you will want to leave behind such as old furniture. Decide if you will want to give these items to charity, discard them, or sell them.
- Make a list of everyone and every company you will need to notify about your move.
- Collect all of your personal records such as legal documents, medical records, school records.
4 to 5 Weeks Before Your Move:
- Notify the Post Office and provide them with a Change of Address form.
- Create a floor plan of your new home or office and start to organize where everything should go once you arrive at your new destination.
- Don’t forget your pets and plants.. they may require special transportation. If so, ask the specialists at H & W Warehouse Inc for guidance.
- Plan a garage sale to sell unwanted items or arrange to donate them to charity.
- Contact your utilities, (Cable TV, Trash, Power, Water), and arrange to have them disconnected.
- Make travel arrangements and reservations for your moving trip.
2 to 3 Weeks Before Your Move:
- If you will be packing some or all of your belongings yourself, obtain packing boxes and tape. H & S Warehouse Inc can help you with the supplies you will need.
- Drivers Licenses and Automobile Registration – determine what is required at your new location and how soon you will need to update your registrations.
- Contact your H & S Warehouse consultant to review your plans and confirm your moving date.
- Start Packing, if you are doing some of your own. Carefully label each box as to what is in it and which room it will go to in your new location.
- Contact your bank, insurance company and other financial institutions and arrange to have your address changed with each of them or funds transferred if you are changing banks.
- Don’t forget your safety deposit boxes. If you have one, go to your bank, remove the contents and close out the account.
- Pick up any dry cleaning and shoes which have been repaired.
- Return library books and rented videos.
1 Week Before Your Move:
- Drain gas and oil from power equipment which will be moved such as lawn mowers and snow blowers.
- Provide specific directions for your new location to be given to H & S Warehouse Inc during the move.
- Defrost your freezer and refrigerator. Be sure to prop the doors open so they won’t accidentally close on pets or children.
- Prepare a “Trip Kit” for moving day. This should include the items you will want to have with you during your move to the new location.
- Check with the utility companies at your new location to verify they will be on when you need for them to be.
Moving Out Day:
- Remove the sheets and bedding from your beds and put these into your “Load Last” box.
- Make sure someone is at your home or office to be there for the H&S Warehouse moving team when they arrive to pack up your belongings.
- You, or your agent, will need to confirm that everything which needs to be moved is placed on the truck and verify that nothing is moved which should remain behind.
- Clean out your old residence or office once your belongings are moved.
Moving In Day:
- Verify that your utilities are on. If not, contact the utility companies and ask for immediate help.
- Plan to be present at the new location when the moving team arrives. If you cannot be there, an individual 18 years or older will need to be selected.
- Once everything is moved, check your items closely before signing off. Check to ensure that nothing is broken or missing and that everything is in the room it should be.
- Be sure to let your H & S Warehouse consultant know how your move went.
